Tattoo Aftercare

Your new tattoo is a piece of art — and how you care for it in the first few weeks determines how it looks for a lifetime.

Ink My Heart Tattoos

Your Ink
Deserves the
Best Care

Proper aftercare is essential for healing and to maintain the quality, detail, and color of your tattoo. Every tattoo we create is a piece of art, and we want it to look incredible for a lifetime.

Aftercare
Instructions

Follow these six steps carefully to protect and heal your new tattoo.

01

Leave the Bandage On

Leave the protective bandage on for 3 days, unless your tattoo artist instructs otherwise. This gives the skin time to begin healing in a clean environment.
02

Wash Gently

After removing the bandage, gently wash the tattoo with warm water (not hot) and a mild fragrance-free soap. Use only your clean hands — no sponges, washcloths, or anything abrasive.
03

Rinse & Pat Dry

Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub the skin — gentle patting prevents irritation and protects the fresh ink.
04

Air Dry

Allow the tattoo to air dry for at least 5 minutes before applying any aftercare product. This lets the skin breathe and prevents trapping moisture.
05

Apply Ointment

Apply a very thin layer of aftercare ointment. Do not cover the tattoo again unless instructed — the skin needs to breathe to heal properly.
06

Repeat Daily

Repeat this process twice a day, preferably morning and night, until the tattoo is fully healed. Consistency is key to a perfect result.

Important

Things You
Should Avoid

First 48 Hours

Avoid sexual activity if the tattooed area may be exposed to friction or bodily fluids.

No Soaking

Do not soak in pools, oceans, lakes, hot tubs, saunas, or jacuzzis. Showering is fine.

No Gym / Sports

Avoid gym workouts and contact sports for at least 2 weeks.

Don't Scratch or Peel

Do not scratch, pick, or peel the tattoo even if itchy. This causes ink loss or scarring.

Avoid Sunlight

Avoid direct sunlight on the fresh tattoo while healing.

No Unapproved Products

Do not apply creams, lotions, or products unless recommended by your tattoo artist.

Keep Pets Away

Keep pets away from the fresh tattoo during the healing process.

Stuck Clothing

If the tattoo sticks to clothing, moisten with water and gently remove it. Never pull dry.

No Dirty Water

Avoid contact with dirty water or environments during healing.

Thin Layer Only

Do not apply excess ointment — a thin layer is enough for the skin to breathe.

Common Questions

Frequently
Asked

Can I work out after getting a tattoo?

Avoid the gym, heavy lifting, and contact sports for at least 2 weeks after getting your tattoo. Sweat and friction can irritate the healing skin and introduce bacteria, which may lead to infection or ink loss.

When can I swim?

Wait until your tattoo is fully healed before swimming — typically 4 to 6 weeks. Pools, oceans, lakes, and hot tubs contain bacteria and chemicals that can damage fresh ink and cause infection.

Is peeling normal?

Yes, light peeling and flaking is completely normal and is part of the healing process — similar to a sunburn. Do not pick or scratch the peeling skin. Let it shed naturally to preserve the ink underneath.

Can I shave over my tattoo?

Wait until your tattoo is fully healed before shaving over the area. Shaving too early can cause irritation, remove scabs prematurely, and damage the ink. Once healed, shave gently with a clean razor.

What if my tattoo looks cloudy?

A cloudy or milky appearance is completely normal during the healing process. This is caused by a layer of new skin forming over the ink. It typically clears up within a few weeks as the skin fully heals and settles.
